It's Not Easy Being Green

St Patrick's Day is upon us. That means temporary green decorations.
I don't want to spend a lot of time on these little holidays, but then again I don't want them to pass unnoticed either. So here is what we are doing at our home.
After Valentine's Day I found a bag of all green M&M's on clearance. I also found a bag of red and silver kisses on clearance. I picked out all the red ones and used the silver for my candy dish.
Guess what we did with the rest?
We made these cute decadent clover treats.
Can I just say chocolate covered pretzels are awesome!
Here's what we did.First we covered a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Then we covered the cookie sheet with a single layer of pretzels and put a Hershey's kiss on each and every pretzel. Then we put them in the oven at 200 degrees until they were all warm and melty and oh so delish.

Then we took them out of the oven and put 3 green M&M's on each kiss. We put them in the fridge until the chocolate set back up. Then we added a line of green frosting to make the stem. The frosting was greener in real life, it looks really light in the picture.
They turned out so cute and ended up being a quick and fun treat for family night.

See how fun they are. Even the backs of them are so cute.
The only problem?
They did not last very long.
But alas, what is a girl without her one true love?
Um, er, that is, her *cough* chocolate.

  16. Cute idea. The only bag of green m&ms i can find are mint flavored! Don't think i can get plain ones. Do you think the mint will work with the pretzels?

  17. mmm, I love mint M&M's! I've never tried it with this recipe, the only way to find out is to try it! You'll have to let us know how they turn out.

  18. Mine are in the oven now. I'm thinking this would be a cute treat with all sorts of color combinations, not just shamrocks.

  19. What a fab idea. We'll definately be making these!

  20. anybody have trouble melting the kiss?? How long did it take you to melt...we had in oven at 200 for over 30 minutes and was not melting...I made the mistake of increasing oven..burning pretzle and well you know what comes after that?? Any cooking time ofr success???

  21. The kiss will not melt down. It gets soft and when you take it out of the oven and push the m & m's into it, it forms to the pretzel. No more than 5 min.

  22. I found this post from Pinterest, I just made these with the green mint M&Ms, I didn't bother with the stem today because it was just a trial, but they are delicious! To the poster above, I only left mine in the oven for about 5 minutes they were very soft.

  23. Oh my gosh! These are adorable! I'm so stealing this =o) But I promise to link back to you! Thanks!

  24. Where can you get a bag of just green m & m's please? Thanks!

  25. Check the bulk food section of your grocery or candy store for all green m&m's. They also have them in party stores near wedding supplies. These are great with Rolos or caramel kisses, too!

  27. Mine did not melt either. I kept waiting for the melting to happen and think we overcooked them. Yuck. I guess 5 minutes is the magic number? Trying again.

  28. These are very cute -- found you via Pinterest and I'll be making these with my kids this week.

    Thanks!

  31. I cannot wait to make these tonight! My little man's birthday is St. Patrick's Day so we are making them to top off his green rice krispie treats for school tomorrow! He saw the picture and is so excited to make them tonight! Thanks for sharing!

  32. I tried this but couldn't find green m&ms so I used Easter colors. But yours look much better.

  33. If planning ahead, I would recommend buying Christmas M&M's and using the green from the bag. I used the red ones for treats for my boys. Very easy to do and cute idea.

  34. help :0
this looked so cute wanted to use it for St Paddys day
I tried this and chocolate never melted in oven any suggestions

  35. I recto end using Hershey block chocolates instead of kisses. Also the mint m&m's are really big compared to regular m&m's . If you have time to hunt or go to the candy store that sells just green it's a better outcome than the mint. Fantastic idea overall and the kids are excited to bring ours to school tomorrow to share with friends!

  36. Can someone give me a realistic time frame
how long should it take the chocolate to melt, I have tried 3x and kisses are not melting after 1/2 hour if I press down with a spoon they are soft but not melted!!!!
    Help
I have convection oven and tried it on pure convection and bake confection, with small pretzels and big pretzels no melted chocolate :(

  37. Such a cute idea! Two of my kids were born on St. Patty's Day (5 years apart) and I'm making these for their birthday party this year!

  38. Same here as JLo--The kisses are not melting even after trying to increase the heat :( Ugh, I am disappointed.

  39. I am quoting a comment by Rachelle "The kiss will not melt down. It gets soft and when you take it out of the oven and push the m & m's into it, it forms to the pretzel. No more than 5 min." This is how I do them as well. It is actually easier to work with if they are not a puddle of melted chocolate. Hope this helps!

  40. I put them in for to long and they are not melted. They are hard and powdery if I try to put the m&m's in. Can you take them out and redo the same ones again?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Found this on Pinterest. My 3yo son's favorite color is green and my niece gave him a pound of green m&ms for his bday. Finally something to do with them!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just made them and they turned out great! I used peanut butter M&M's (only made 12 green ones!), and they are yummy!

  43. I was so excited about making these but had the same issue as others. I was assuming the chocolate would look more melted. So after 25 min I also turned up the time and they got gross. I ruined a whole batch. I was so disappointed:( I read these comments too late for this year, but maybe next year:)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I understand the kiss will not melt down but you can't even press the chocolate down after 5 min. hmmmm, not sure what's going on with the recipe. How disappointing!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I thought this was such a cute idea, but COULD NOT GET THE KISSES TO MELT. I am so disappointed because I wanted them for ST. Patrick's Day. I tried three times, increased the heat and even tried to melt them in the microwave with no success.....waste of time and money for me. :(

    ReplyDelete
  46. I also could not get the kisses to melt...made the mistake of increasing oven temp and they were ruined. I might try another kind of chocolate next time....or just spoon melted chocolate onto them?

    ReplyDelete
  47. SUGGESTION!!! For those who couldn't get the kisses to melt, we used Rolos. They melt wonderfully, and we got to take full advantage of this great idea! My husband doesn't care for the M&M's, so we put pecan halves on a few of them for him. Everyone is happy!

Thanks for sharing your family and the great idea. Lots of fun!

  48. Make sure to use "fresh" kisses. I used the rest of an old bag and part of a new bag. The new ones worked perfect after 5 minutes in the oven, the old ones not so much.

  49. Love this snack idea! Thanks for sharing!

  50. I also tried these for St. Patricks Day and the kisses wouldn't soften and they just got all crumbly. Totally ruined. Maybe I could try like others said and after five minutes take out. I left them in for quite a while thinking that they would get more melty.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Instead of using kisses, we use the round candy melts that you buy to meltdown to make candy (comes in chocolate, white chocolate and various other colors). We put one of those on top of the pretzel, put in a 250* oven for 3 minutes and they are perfect for putting the M&M's on them. I use white chocolate with red and green M&M's for Christmas, the pastel M&M's for Easter, etc. Oh, and I don't put wax paper down on the cookie sheet, no need. These are cheaper to make with the melts vs kisses, i'll make 200 at a time, the family just loves them.

  52. I made something very similar for valentines. I used Hershey's HUGS. They worked great

    ReplyDelete
  53. I just made these with my kids. My first mistake was going by memory and I put the stove on at a temp of 350. These ended up more crumbly and not melty. Looked up link and found my error so changed the oven temp to 200. Much better. Kisses never looked melted but knew they would be soft after a bit in the oven and they were. My second problem, which no one has mentioned, is that it was hard as heck to place the M & M's on neatly. I have chocolate gooping out over the M&M's. Still good but not clover-esque.

  54. This is such a cute idea and looks easy...My daughters birthday is on St. Patrick's Days... thanks for the idea...

  55. These were a big disapppointment for us too. My girls were so excited to help make them and patiently waited to eat them. The chocolate never melted for us and instead crumbled all over. What a waste of time and money. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I too went through thinking the kisses would "melt". After reading all the posts, I redid with 200 degrees for exactly 5 minutes and the kisses were soft when the M&M's were pushed into them. Agree with the response that it was a little difficult to place the M&M's.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just did it according to the directions of 200 degrees for 5 minutes and it worked perfectly. I put in 2 m&ms together (kind of like eyes), then placed the 3rd one in and it was easy to place them.

  58. Nedra I Tried and mine didn't melt either.turned oven up also came out all crumbly,my daughter said I left them to long and should have left the oven on 200,going to try again tomorrow

  59. I wish I had read the comments before I tried to make these. The kisses did NOT melt, I wasted two big trays full of theses, w
Went out and got rolos after I read the comments and started over, Yhese worked perfectly. The kisses are a waste of time and money.

  60. I used mini kisses which are in the baking isle- they are about 1/3 the size of a regular kiss and became soft after about 12-15 minutes in the oven. They were soft enough to press the m&m's into but they did not turn into a "blob". I think this was easier since I also did not have to unwrap any kisses.
